What's that logo all about, then?
Good question. The Friends of Fulbourn Nature Reserve logo is heavily laden with symbolism. Fulbourn is a pre-Norman settlement. The name is made up of two old words, whose modern equivalents are 'Fowl' - i.e. a bird, and 'Bourn', which means a stream or small river - in Scotland they say 'Burn'. So the name means something like 'Place with birds and a small river', or 'River with birds'. Hence the bird at the top and the water symbol at the bottom of the logo. Thanks to the draining of the Fens, the river is long gone, but there are still a lot of birds about, as you will see if you visit the reserve. Moreover, the reserve still includes areas of wetland, which are maintained by the reserve management. So birds and water are good symbols of the reserve today. The tree set in grassland with flowers symbolises some other aspects of the reserve. We might produce a range of tee-shirts, tea-towels and so on, featuring the symbol, to raise money for the reserve. Would you be interested? If so, please let us know. |
